What Baretext is
Baretext is a writing app that runs on your Mac. Writing, saving and everything else it does works without this service and without an account. This service is only for the optional AI suggestions.
What we receive
- When you sign in with Google: your Google account’s email address and its unique Google identifier, to recognise you next time. We do not receive your password, contacts, files or anything else from Google.
- When you ask for a suggestion: the text of the scene or scenes you chose, sent only when you click, after the app has shown you what will be sent.
What we do with it
- Scene text is passed to Anthropic’s Claude to produce a summary or names, and the answer is returned to you. We do not store scene text, and we do not write it to our logs; logs hold counts and outcomes only.
- Anthropic processes the text under its commercial API terms; at the time of writing it does not use API inputs to train its models. See Anthropic’s own policy for its current terms.
- Summaries the AI writes are kept beside your manuscript on your computer, not on our servers.
- We keep your email and identifier, your plan, and the records of your signed-in devices, for as long as you have an account.
Your choices
- You can write, save and export your manuscript without ever signing in.
- You can sign out of every device, and delete your account and the data above, from within Baretext (Sign out everywhere; Delete my account). Deleting the account does not touch your manuscript, which is only ever on your computer.
Where it runs
The service runs on Cloudflare’s network; sign-in is by Google. Those companies process data as described in their own policies.
